What you'll do

This 5-day course at Glenmore Lodge is designed for climbers ready to progress into technical winter climbing. Begin with essential skill refreshers—crampon use, axe work, and rope systems—before heading to the iconic Ben Nevis for advanced ice and mixed climbs. You’ll practice protection placement, lead climbing, route-finding, and efficient movement on snow, ice, and rock. Guided by expert instructors, you’ll tackle classic routes while gaining confidence, independence, and a deeper understanding of Scottish winter mountaineering.

Itinerary

You will arrive at Glenmore Lodge, nestled in the Scottish Highlands near Aviemore. After settling in, you’ll meet your experienced climbing instructors who will run through gear checks and safety briefings. The day focuses on an introduction to winter climbing, covering essential skills like crampon fitting, ice axe use, and basic ropework. You might also practice some movement techniques on easy terrain or an indoor wall to prepare for the week ahead.
The second day involves heading out to nearby winter climbing areas to practice foundational ice and mixed climbing techniques. Your instructors will guide you through footwork, axe placements, and efficient movement on snow, ice, and rock. You will also work on rope skills, including belaying and short pitch climbing. This day helps build confidence and technique in a safe and supportive environment.
Today you will travel to Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain, known for its challenging winter climbing routes. You will tackle some of the more demanding ice and mixed climbs under expert supervision. The focus is on building lead climbing skills, placing protection, and route finding in winter conditions. This day combines technical challenges with the awe-inspiring scenery of the Scottish Highlands.
On the fourth day, you will climb classic Ben Nevis winter routes that test your endurance and skills. Your instructors will support you in tackling longer, more technical climbs involving both ice and mixed sections. Emphasis will be on efficient climbing, risk management, and teamwork. The day offers a true alpine experience, pushing your abilities while surrounded by spectacular mountain vistas.
Your final day involves one or two climbs that consolidate all the skills you have developed. Whether revisiting favorite routes or trying new challenges, you will enjoy climbing with greater confidence and independence. After descending, you will return to Glenmore Lodge for a debrief session where your instructors will review your progress and provide guidance for future climbing. You’ll then prepare for departure or onward travel.
