Experience the thrill of ice climbing in the breathtaking Arctic wilderness of Abisko, Sweden. Over four days, you’ll learn essential beginner skills—from gear familiarization and basic movement to climbing steeper ice routes—all guided by experienced instructors. This course focuses on safety, technique, and confidence building in a supportive environment. Whether you’re new to ice climbing or refreshing your skills, this adventure offers an unforgettable introduction to the sport amidst spectacular frozen landscapes.

Itinerary

Your adventure begins in the serene Arctic setting of Abisko, where you'll be welcomed by your guides and introduced to the unique environment of Swedish Lapland. After settling in and meeting the group, you'll be outfitted with essential ice climbing gear—crampons, ice axes, harnesses, helmets, and climbing boots. The day is focused on getting comfortable with the equipment and understanding the fundamentals of ice safety. With your guides’ support, you’ll learn about the structure of ice, how to move efficiently across it, and the basics of using your tools. You’ll have your first chance to try some basic movements on easy terrain, laying the groundwork for the days ahead.
The second day begins with a short hike to a local icefall suited for beginners, offering an ideal setting to develop your climbing skills in a controlled environment. You’ll work on techniques like front-pointing with crampons and swinging your ice tools with precision. Rope systems and belaying will be introduced and practiced extensively, with instructors guiding you through each step. By the afternoon, you'll be climbing short top-roped routes, focusing on body positioning and efficient movement. This is a confidence-building day where you’ll start feeling the rhythm of ice climbing under the guidance of experienced instructors.
With the basics in place, the third day takes you to steeper and more varied ice formations. You'll apply what you've learned in more dynamic situations, climbing longer lines and learning to read the ice for optimal tool and foot placements. There’s an emphasis on refining your technique—conserving energy while maintaining control—and exploring the importance of route selection. Your instructors will demonstrate how to build basic top-rope anchors and manage ropes in more advanced settings. Throughout the day, you’ll be encouraged to climb more independently while receiving ongoing support and feedback.
On your final day, you'll revisit your favorite climbs or tackle a new challenge, putting all your skills into practice. Whether it’s a longer climb, a route with more variation, or simply refining your movement, this is your opportunity to consolidate everything you’ve learned. With your guide by your side, you’ll climb more confidently and efficiently, using techniques that just days ago felt unfamiliar. After a rewarding day on the ice, the group returns to Abisko for a closing session, where your progress is reviewed and the next steps in your climbing journey are discussed. You’ll leave with new skills, unforgettable experiences, and a deeper connection to the Arctic wilderness
