What you'll do

Norway is a paradise for ice climbers, and Rjukan is one of its most iconic destinations. Known for its historical significance during World War II and the rich industrial heritage, Rjukan has also earned a reputation among ice climbers for its impressive, easily accessible frozen waterfalls. This area offers an exceptional variety of single and multi-pitch ice routes suitable for climbers of all skill levels. Our trip focuses on intermediate climbers looking to enhance their technique and take their first steps into multi-pitch ice climbing. Join us for an unforgettable adventure in the heart of Norway’s ice climbing paradise!

Itinerary

We meet at the OldSchool Hostel by 19:00 for a course briefing and to discuss current ice conditions. All necessary ice climbing gear—boots, crampons, axes, helmet, and harness—are included. If you prefer, feel free to bring your own gear.
We depart from the OldSchool Hostel at 08:00 to a nearby ice crag. Today focuses on basic ice climbing techniques, using toprope climbing to practice footwork, axe placement, and safe belaying. We’ll cover the essential knots and learn how to handle ice screws for safety. We return to the hostel around 16:00.
After leaving the hostel at 08:00, we head to a different ice crag to work on climbing steeper terrain. Today’s focus is on preparing for multi-pitch ice climbing, including rope calls, belay stations, and how to enter and exit safely. We return by 16:00.
At 08:00, we set off for our first multi-pitch ice climbing adventure. The chosen route will depend on individual fitness levels, group skill, and ice conditions. With a 1:2 guide-to-client ratio, you’ll have personalized attention during this challenging day on the ice.
Once again, we leave the OldSchool Hostel at 08:00 for another day of multi-pitch ice climbing in Norway. The route selection will be based on fitness, skill, and ice conditions. We aim to return by 16:00, with a guide-to-client ratio of 1:2 for optimal safety.
After a restful night and a hearty breakfast, we say goodbye and depart from the hostel, filled with unforgettable ice climbing memories from Norway! I recommend to leave around 10-11 am.
