What you'll do

Embark on a six-day journey along Iceland’s iconic Laugavegur Trail, hiking from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk. Traverse rainbow mountains, volcanic plains, and glacier valleys, with nights spent in remote mountain huts and evenings under the midnight sun. An unforgettable adventure.

Itinerary

We’ll start our adventure with a scenic 3 to 4-hour drive from Reykjavík to Landmannalaugar, passing by the South Coast and views of Hekla volcano. Upon arrival, we’ll ease into the journey with a warm-up hike through Landmannalaugar’s striking landscapes - lava fields, the colorful Grænagil canyon, and the blue slopes of Bláhnjúkur, which peaks at 940 meters (3,084 ft). We'll spend our first night at Landmannalaugar, sharing a welcoming dinner and relaxing in the peaceful surroundings - perhaps even with a dip in the nearby natural hot springs. Distance: 8 km (4.9 mi) | Elevation Gain: +470 m (+1,540 ft) | Time: 4-5 hours
We’ll start the day by crossing the Laugahraun lava field and winding past Brennisteinsalda’s colorful slopes and the steaming Reykjafjöll mountains. The trail leads us through narrow gorges and past geothermal features like the bubbling Stórihver hot spring. We’ll reach the day’s high point at Hrafntinnusker (1,100 m / 3,609 ft)—a stark black obsidian desert—where we’ll pause for lunch. From there, we descend into the vivid geothermal gullies of Jökultungur, with views of nearby glaciers on clear days. After a refreshing river crossing, we arrive at our campsite near Álftavatn Lake to enjoy dinner and relax in the tranquil highland scenery. Distance: 24 km (14.9 mi) | Elevation Gain: +900 m (+2,952 ft) | Time: 8–9 hours
After a hearty breakfast, we’ll begin the day with a stream crossing before heading into the vast black sands of Mælifellssandur. Along the way, we’ll pass the moss-covered volcanoes of Stórasúla and Hattafell, their vivid green slopes striking against the dark volcanic terrain. On clear days, we’ll enjoy sweeping views of the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers—two iconic volcano-glaciers, rich in geological history. As we continue, the dramatic 200-meter-deep Markarfljótsgljúfur Canyon reveals itself - one of the day's true highlights. We’ll finish our trek at Botnar, a lush green haven in the desert, where we’ll settle in for the night with a warm dinner and peaceful views. Distance: 15 km (9.5 mi) | Elevation Gain: -40 m (-130 ft) | Time: 6–7 hours
On Day 4, we begin the final stretch of the Laugavegur Trail, leaving behind Emstrur's stark beauty at around 600 meters (1,970 ft) and heading toward the lush valley of Þórsmörk. The trail winds through the scenic Almenningar gorge, with views of Mount Einhyrningur (Unicorn Mountain) and the surrounding glaciers - Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull - dominating the horizon. As we descend, the landscape transforms: the barren highlands give way to the first signs of forest, leading into Þórsmörk’s dense birch woods and vibrant greenery. We finish our journey in this glacier-framed oasis, celebrating the completion of the legendary Laugavegur Trail. After the trail, you’ll board the highland bus and depart for Hella, where you’ll stay the night in a comfortable countryside hotel in preparation for our visit to Iceland's famous South Coast the next day. Distance: 15 km (9.5 mi) | Elevation Gain: -300 m (-985 ft) | Time: 6–7 hours
The hike to the Magni and Móði craters begins in the lush Þórsmörk valley and climbs into a stark volcanic landscape shaped by the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption. Passing black sand plains, sharp lava ridges, and steaming vents, the trail reveals Iceland’s raw, ever-changing geology framed by distant glaciers. Near the craters—named after Thor’s sons—the terrain is otherworldly, with fresh lava fields and dramatic volcanic features. On clear days, panoramic views stretch over Mýrdalsjökull glacier and the surrounding Highlands. The trail is moderately challenging with some steep, loose sections, requiring sturdy footwear and good fitness. Distance: 16 km (10 mi) | Time: 7–8 hours
On the last day, we’ll explore Þórsmörk and its stunning surroundings. A hike up Mount Útigönguhöfði, reaching approximately 830 meters (2,723 ft), offers spectacular views over the valley and nearby glaciers. For those preferring a gentler option, a peaceful stroll to Húsadalur or relaxing around Langidalur is perfect. As we head back to Reykjavík, we’ll pass by the iconic Seljalandsfoss waterfall, a highlight of Iceland’s south coast. Expect to arrive in Reykjavík by early evening, around 6:30 p.m. | Distance: 6 km (3.5 mi) | Elevation Gain: +275 m (+902 ft) | Time: 3 hours

Mountain Huts

During the hike, you’ll overnight in traditional Icelandic mountain huts, staying in shared dormitory-style rooms. These huts are basic but atmospheric, offering a true back-to-nature experience deep in the Icelandic highlands. Facilities include cold running water, gas stoves for cooking, and wood or oil heaters for warmth—though there’s no electricity for charging devices. Showers are available at all huts except the first one, typically for a small fee (around ISK 500 for 5 minutes). Toilets are usually located in separate buildings nearby. While the comfort level is simple, the dramatic landscapes surrounding each hut more than make up for it.
