What you'll do

Nestled in Nepal's Solukhumbu district, Mera Peak offers a captivating adventure through lush pine and rhododendron forests into remote alpine valleys. The journey to Mera Base Camp unfolds across uninhabited terrain with stunning views of the Himalayas. Rising just south of Everest, Mera Peak is the highest trekking peak in Nepal. Though the climb is non-technical, deep snow and crevasses can challenge the summit push. Along the way, you'll experience the pristine beauty of Nepal’s wild hillsides and glaciers, far from the crowded trails.

Itinerary

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, a Freedom Adventures representative will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in Kathmandu. Meet with your team and the lead guide at the hotel lobby at 2:00 pm or gear and equipment checking, followed by a presentation from the local representative with helpful information. If needed, go to the market with the lead guide for renting, buying, and money exchange and then you can explore the area. The day ends with a traditional Nepali dinner.
After breakfast, we’ll set off for Manthali, our stop for the night. The journey covers around 135 km and takes about 7 hours driving. The road is rough and adventurous: expect a bumpy but thrilling ride as we leave the city behind and dive into Nepal’s raw, untouched landscapes. Upon arrival, we’ll settle into our camping tents for the night, surrounded by the quiet charm of nature.
The day begins with an unforgettable 20-minute flight from the Ramechhap Airport in Manthali to the iconic Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla. As you soar between towering Himalayan peaks, the adventure truly begins. On arrival, enjoy a light meal before meeting your local crew, including your assistant guide and support staff. After handing over your overnight bag, we’ll hit the trail. Today’s trek winds through lush forest paths, peaceful farmlands, and over sparkling streams. After 4 to 5 hours of scenic hiking, we’ll arrive in Paiya, where we’ll rest for the night surrounded by nature’s quiet beauty. Distance: 12 km (7.4 mi) | Elevation Gain: +620 m (+2,043 ft) - 700 m (-2,296 ft) | Time: 8 hours
After leaving Paiya, we cross a small wooden bridge and make our way up the slippery trail leading to Kari La Pass. The path takes us through dense rhododendron forests, rich with color and mountain stillness. We’ll pause for lunch in a quiet village along the way, recharging for the second part of the hike. As we continue along narrow mountain trails, we’re rewarded with sweeping views of Kund Dudh Himal, the powerful Dudhkoshi River, and the vast valley below. By afternoon, we arrive in Panguam, a small settlement rooted in farming and trade. Take time to explore the village and connect with locals: many have incredible stories of life and adventure on these rugged trails. Distance: 11.5 km (7.1 mi) | Elevation Gain: +810 m (+2,657 ft) -700 m (-2,296 ft) | Time: 5 hours
Today’s trek kicks off with a steady 40-minute uphill climb to a quiet village that marks the beginning of the Great Himalayan Lower Cultural Trail. From here, we continue through enchanting forests of rhododendron, Nepalese alder, and oak, where the sounds of birdsong and flowing water guide us forward. Along the way, we’ll cross gentle streams and pass hidden waterfalls, immersing ourselves in the serene beauty of the Himalayas. By late afternoon, we reach Ramailo Danda, where you can relax and, if you wish, visit the local monastery for a quiet moment of reflection. Distance: 8 km (5 mi) | Elevation Gain: +830 m (+2,723 ft) -470 m (-1,541 ft) | Time: 6 hours
Today begins with breathtaking views of Mera Peak and Salpa, setting the tone for a truly memorable trek. We’ll then enter the remote and pristine Makalu Barun National Park: a sanctuary of wild, untouched Himalayan beauty. With a bit of luck, you might even spot rare wildlife, including the elusive Red Panda. The trail continues with a challenging descent, weaving through rugged terrain and crossing several mountain streams. After about 4 hours on the trail, we’ll arrive at Chhetra Khola, a peaceful resting point deep in nature where we’ll spend the night. Distance: 6 km (3.7 mi) | Elevation Gain: +360 m (+1,181 ft) -510 m (-1,673 ft) | Time: 4 hours
From Chhetra Khola, brace yourself for a steep ascent through a vibrant tapestry of fir and rhododendron forest, leading you to Taktor. Here, the familiar Lukla trail converges with the main Mera Peak route, (this will be our return path). After a well-deserved lunch in Taktor, the adventure continues as you trace the meandering Hinku River into its expansive basin. The trail then weaves upwards through a sparse yet striking blue pine forest before gently descending into Kothe, a charming seasonal settlement offering cozy lodges and convenient shops for trekkers. Distance: 6.5 km (4.0 mi) | Elevation Gain: +770 m (+2,526 ft) -280 m (-919 ft) | Time: 4 hours
Today, the journey takes you above the tree line onto the glacial moraine. Following the Hinku River's western bank, you'll steadily climb into sprawling grassy meadows. The valley opens up, revealing temporary pastures for local livestock. Your path leads to Gondishung, a summer pasture with a mani wall, where you'll enjoy lunch with stunning views of Kusum Kanguru and Mera Peak. Afterward, hike to an ancient gompa (monastery) hidden in a cave beneath a huge boulder. From there, an easy trek over moraines brings you to Thangnak, a small settlement of teahouses and yak herder sheds. You'll spend two crucial nights here for acclimatization. Distance: 9 km (5.6 mi) | Elevation Gain: +690 m (+2,264 ft) -0 m (0 ft) | Time: 6 hours
Hike to the glacial lake Sabai Tsho (also referred to as Tama Pokhari) for acclimitazation. The air is crisp and thin, and the trail winds through rocky moraines. All around, jagged snow-capped peaks tower in silence, including glimpses of Mera Peak to the north and Kusum Kanguru in the distance. It's the first real bite of the himalayan feeling of isolation and vastness. Learn about the lake's historical significance from your guide, take some photographs, create some reels, soak in the views, and return to Thangnak for Lunch. Distance: 3 km (1.9 mi) | Elevation Gain: +200 m (656 ft) -200 m (656 ft)
Today's trek leads you along the lateral moraine of Dig Glacier and Dig Kharka, ascending steadily beside the river. As you gain elevation, prepare to witness breathtaking mountain ranges and miniature glaciers, passing the serene Sabai Tsho Lake. A challenging ascent awaits near your destination: Khare. Here, you'll be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of Mera Peak, Kyashar, and Kusum Kanguru before meeting your climbing guide for a crucial briefing on the adventures ahead. Distance: 6 km (3.7 mi) | Elevation Gain: +600 m (+1,968 ft) -0 m (0 ft) | Time: 5 hours
Today is dedicated to crucial acclimatization and skill training. You'll hike to Mera Base Camp (5,350 m / 17,552 ft), where under the expert guidance of your climbing instructor, you'll learn and practice essential techniques for using crampons, ropes, ascenders, descenders, and an ice axe. While Mera Peak doesn't demand advanced technical skills, mastering these basics is vital for a safe and successful climb. After your training, you'll descend back to Khare for some well-deserved rest. Distance: 4 km (2.4 mi) | Elevation Gain: +350 m (+1,148 ft) -350 m (-1,148 ft)
Today marks a significant push towards your summit goal as you journey from Khare to Mera High Camp. This challenging day involves an approximate 8-hour climb. Though the distance is relatively short, prepare for a rapid and substantial altitude gain. Upon reaching High Camp, you'll be rewarded with a breathtaking panorama of some of the world's most iconic peaks, including Chamlang, Makalu, Baruntse, Lhotse, Nuptse, and many more. Distance: 3 km (1.9 mi) | Elevation Gain: +580 m (+1,903 ft) -0 m (0 ft)
Today is Summit Day! You'll begin as early as conditions allow, pushing along the southwest ridge towards the base of Mera Central summit. The final, arduous push involves an approximately 400-meter ascent to conquer the peak. After ten days of relentless effort, stand atop Nepal's tallest trekking peak and embrace an unparalleled, panoramic vista of 8000-meter giants: Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and countless other magnificent peaks. Congratulate yourself on this remarkable achievement before beginning your descent back to Khare for a well-deserved summit celebration. Distance: 8.85 km (5.5 mi) | Elevation Gain: +590 m (+1,936 ft) -1,490 m (-4,888 ft) | Time: Exceeds 12 hours
This is a reserved day built into the itinerary to account for unexpected delays, such as poor weather or acclimatization issues. Since summit conditions on Day 13 aren’t guaranteed, this buffer allows flexibility to attempt the climb if conditions were unfavorable or if a team member needed extra time to adjust. If everything goes according to plan, this spare day may not be needed and can be enjoyed as a well-earned rest.
Today, your journey takes you on a significant descent through Thangnak as you make your way back to Kothe, leaving the towering mountains behind. En route, you'll have one final opportunity to marvel at the stunning scenery surrounding Sabai Tasho Lake. You'll spend the night relaxing in a teahouse in Kothe. Distance: 13 km (8.1 mi) | Elevation Gain: +0 m (0 ft) -1,300 m (-4,265 ft) | Time: 7 hours
Today, your adventure continues as you retrace your steps back to Taktho, preparing for a change of scenery. From there, you'll begin a scenic and steady ascent along a picturesque ridge, offering expansive views of the surrounding Himalayan landscape. This climb culminates in crossing a challenging mountain pass, a rewarding effort that grants you even more breathtaking vistas. Finally, you'll embark on a descent into Thulikharka, a peaceful spot where you'll spend the night. Distance: 8 km (5.0 mi) | Elevation Gain: +940 m (+3,084 ft) -300 m (-984 ft) | Time: 6 hours
Today marks the triumphant final push of your incredible journey! From Zwarta La Pass, a significant descent awaits as you make your way towards Lukla. This last stretch brings you closer to civilization and the completion of your trek. Once you arrive, it's time to celebrate with your amazing crew members in the evening. Share stories, laugh out loud, and enjoy a well-deserved beer! You've earned every moment of this celebration after your remarkable adventure through the Himalayas. Distance: 10 km (6.2 mi) | Elevation Gain: +400 m (+1,312 ft) -1,760 m (-5,774 ft)
The adventure isn't over just yet! Your final leg of the journey brings a different kind of thrill: a scenic flight from Lukla to Ramechhap, followed by a picturesque drive back to Kathmandu. Due to the high possibility of flight cancellations and delays, we strongly recommend allowing at least one additional day in your itinerary to accommodate flexible timings and ensure a smooth return. While the option of a helicopter ride is available at an extra cost, planning for an extra day provides peace of mind and flexibility for your departure.
Today marks your departure from Kathmandu. Depending on your flight schedule, our local representative will ensure you're dropped off at the airport approximately 4 hours before your scheduled flight time. Please note that the standard check-out time from your hotel is soon. Congratulations on completing this incredible journey!
